Volunteers in Helsinki Pride 2024

Pride Month is celebrated in Helsinki throughout June. Volunteers can participate in various tasks throughout June, but most volunteer opportunities are during Helsinki Pride Week from June 24th to 30th, 2024.

Volunteers can commit to one or more shifts. Shift lengths vary depending on the task, ranging from 4 to 6 hours. We hope that all volunteers are committed to their volunteer tasks.

We are looking for volunteers for the following tasks:

  • Information Points and Shop
    • At the Helsinki Pride event, there are information points in three different locations: at Pride House, at the starting point of the parade at Senate Square, and at the Park Festival in Kaivopuisto.
    • At the information points, visitors are guided and provided with information about the events and the Helsinki Pride community.
    • The Helsinki Pride Shop is located in two different places: at Pride House and at the Park Festival in Kaivopuisto.
    • The Shop sells Helsinki Pride merchandise.
  • Decoration Team
    • Decorating Pride House, planning and making decorations in advance during week 25.
    • Planning and making decorations for Youth Pride House in advance.
    • Decorating for the Park Festival and parties.
  • Photography Team
    • Photographing various events around Helsinki during Helsinki Pride Week.
    • Documenting the impactful visibility campaign taking over the streets of Helsinki.
    • Photography team members are required to bring their own equipment.
  • Helsinki Pride Parade Guide
    • At the starting point of the Helsinki Pride Parade at Senate Square, guides assist participating groups and individuals in finding their place in the parade.
    • Assisting in preparing the procession floats for event partners.
  • Park Team
    • Assisting program organizers with various activities in the park, such as children’s and youth areas, welcoming partners, and ensuring the park’s overall appearance.
  • Event Production Volunteers
    • Programs are held during Helsinki Pride Week from Monday to Sunday. Venues include Pride House, Women’s Party, Closing Party, and the stage at Kaivopuisto.
    • Numerous program organizers and artists will produce their own programs and performances. The volunteer team receives program organizers, assists them with production tasks, and guides visitors to the correct locations.
    • Work may partially occur in the evening/night.
  • Ticket Sales
    • The ticket sales team’s task is to sell tickets at the door for the Women’s Party on June 28th and the Closing Party on June 29th, from approximately 8:00 pm to 2:00 am.

Would you like to act as the Helsinki Pride group lead Volunteer?

In addition to general volunteer tasks, we are looking for group leads for Helsinki Pride Week. As a volunteer group lead, you will act as the leader of your own small volunteer group. As a group lead, you will join the Helsinki Pride event team to plan and guide the activities of your team together with the volunteer coordinator and other coordinators. You will gain excellent leadership and organizational experience from the role. Volunteer group leads will be interviewed remotely during week 21. Training for the role will be provided in advance during week 23.

What do we expect from volunteers?

  • Volunteers must be of legal age 18.
  • We hope all volunteers have a relaxed and cheerful attitude.
  • You don’t need previous experience or special skills. Experience is always beneficial, and you should mention your volunteer history and expertise when filling out the application form. The most important thing is to have fun in volunteer tasks and to work together to create a great Helsinki Pride event!
  • Commitment to volunteering. However, if you need to cancel your registration, we would appreciate it if you could inform the volunteer coordinator, Tiina Thomas, as soon as possible at tiina@pride.fi.

Why become a volunteer at the Helsinki Pride event?

  • Being a volunteer is fun! While working, you get to meet other like-minded people and the Helsinki Pride community team.
  • You gain valuable experience in NGO work.
  • You get a glimpse behind the scenes of Finland’s largest human rights and cultural event.
  • You will receive a certificate of participation as a volunteer at the Helsinki Pride events.
  • You will receive an invitation to a volunteer banquet, which will be held in the week following Helsinki Pride Week.
  • Volunteers are insured by the organizer. Note that insurance is only valid for individuals registered in Finland. Others are required to insure themselves through their own travel insurance, for example.
  • You will receive a Helsinki Pride volunteer shirt, and snacks and refreshments will be provided during shifts.
  • You get to be part of important work for human rights.

How do I apply to become a volunteer?

  • Please fill out the fields in this application form.
  • Application period: Apply to become a group lead by May 19th. If you don’t want to become a group lead, apply to become a general volunteer by June 5th.
  • We will process applications as they arrive. Accepted volunteers will receive an acceptance letter via email during the spring, which will include information about the team and additional details about the volunteer task. Please remember to check your spam folder if you don’t receive the acceptance letter during the first weeks of June.
  • We will also notify you by June 14th if we are unable to offer you a volunteer position.
  • Only a limited number of volunteers can be accepted for certain tasks. We will try to take into account the preferences mentioned in the application as much as possible.
