Messages of Peace and Hope

We send peace and hope because in conflicts, the position of minorities weakens even further. Because not everyone can grow up without attempts to “repair” them. Because no one’s sexual orientation or gender identity is broken or wrong. And because everyone deserves to feel the power of community.

Hope lies in the community, and in other people. The mission of the Helsinki Pride community is to create and maintain hope even when it feels difficult and when the messages from the surrounding world are hurtful. Peace and hope are born through actions, with pride and togetherness.

We still have much work to do to eliminate discrimination, break down prejudices, and advance the rights of sexual and gender minorities. Compared to other young people, rainbow youth have significantly more concerns about their mental well-being and experiences of not receiving support or help from parents or friends. In Finland, 54% of LGBTQ+ people have experienced harassment in public places or on public transport. Conversion practices have been experienced by 31%, higher than the European average.

Our year-round work requires long-term support. By donating to Helsinki Pride, you can directly impact the lives of LGBTQ+ people in particularly vulnerable situations.

Ambassadors of Peace and Hope

The faces of this year's campaign, our Ambassadors of Peace and Hope, are people from our community, who have, through their actions, progressed peace and hope. Thank you for your important work Marja-Sisko Aalto, Natalia Kallio, Lola Lorenzo, Janne Puhakka and Dakota Robin!

Marja-Sisko Aalto is Finland's first openly trans pastor. She has been an important role model for many, showing that it is never too late to be yourself – you can overcome difficulties. Marja-Sisko has also written eight books and spends her free time on forest hikes with her wife.

Natalia Kallio is a writer, human rights activist, and human rights educator who takes a bold stand against injustice. He defends the rights of our communities on many fronts in Finland and internationally. Natalia is the author of She Needs Bigger Boots and Kotileikki.

Lola Lorenzo is not only a well-known ballroom star and makeup artist in Finland but also the first openly transgender woman in the history of her home country, Somalia. Lola's brave and radiant personality sets an example that everyone can boldly write their own story, regardless of what others think.

Janne Puhakka is the first openly gay Finnish Elite League ice hockey player. He is an important role model that a successful professional in the sports world can be openly themselves, giving many hope that no one is alone.

Dakota Robin is a trans man and Kurd. His shared personal experiences provide peer support for many but also offer information for a broader audience. Dakota travels around the world training companies and communities on diversity, equality, self-awareness, human connections, and inclusion.

Become an Ambassador of Peace and Hope

Each of us can act as an ambassador of peace and hope. What do peace and hope mean to you? Who or what has brought you peace and hope? What actions do you take to progress the rights of sexual and gender minorities in your environment? Tell us! Share your experiences or acts of peace and hope on social media with the hashtag #lahetammerauhaajatoivoa.
