In memory of Sara

We take part in the grief of the departure of Egyptian human rights activist Sarah Hegazy.
Sara took her own life on Sunday 14.06.2020 in her home in Canada, after a long struggle with the Egyptian repressive regime and society that rejects LGBTIQ -people and consider them criminal.
The Egyptian authorities had arrested Sarah in October 2017 after raising the rainbow flag in concert by ”Mashrou leila” band. During the period of her suspension she faced sexual harassment and torture by the officials, before being released in January 2018.
This incident is not the only one in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, as raising the rainbow flag in private or public places still provoke a wave of anger followed by a wave of violence against the LGBTIQ- community in this region.
The last of which was circulated by LGBTIQ -activists in Iraq after the rainbow flag was raised inside a subsidiary building of the The European Union and the British and Canadian embassies in Baghdad have sent to mark the International Day against Homophobia 17.05
The side effects of the society’s rejection, the physical and other forms of violence to which LGBTIQ -people in the MENA region are exposed, do not go away by simply reaching safe country, as some believe.
Facing complicated refugee/ immigrant systems with all the posttraumatic symptoms can affect heavily the mental wellbeing of those people. Asylum/immigration systems that do not take on consideration the specificity and the nature of the LGBTIQ -asylum seekers from MENA.
We recognize lack of knowledge and an insensitive approach from the authorities dealing with LGBTIQ -people from the MENA region. LGBTIQ asylum seekers from MENA are suffering from system that “evaluate” their sexual orientation with same criteria of Europe and Western society. System that does not succeed to integrate those people properly into society, a society where LGBTIQ -people from MENA region are still marginalized.
All this is why there is a need to provide more and better psychological, mental and social support to LGBTIQ asylum seekers/refugees and queer people with immigrant backgrounds , to fight the trauma and loneliness that most of them live with.
May Sarah rest in peace, we will promise to continue the fight for a world with more justice, equality and love.

تنعى منظمة هلسينكي برايد كوميونتي رحيل الناشطة الحقوقية المصرية سارة الحجازي وذلك يوم الاحد ١٤.٠٦.٢٠٢٠ بمقر سكنها بكندا، بعد صراع طويل مع النظام المصري ومجتمع يرفض المثليين والمثليات ومزدوجي ات التوجه الجنسي والعابرين/ات جنسيا ويعتبرهم مجرمين.
القت السلطات المصرية القبض على سارة في أكتوبر ٢٠١٧ بعد رفعها لعلم قوس قزح في حفلة غنائية لفرقة ”مشروع ليلى”، خلال فترة الإيقاف تعرضت لأبشع انواع الهرسلة والتحرش الجنسي ، بدها تم اطلاق سراحها في جانفي ٢٠١٨.
هذا الحادث ليس الأول في منطقة شمال أفريقيا والشرق الأوسط، حيث رفع علم قوس قزح في الأماكن الخاصة والعامة لا يزال يثير موجة من الغضب تليها موجة من العنف ضد مجتمع الميم في تلك المنطقة. وآخرها ما تم تداوله من النشطاء المثليين/ات بالعراق بعد رفع علم قوس قزح داخل مبنى خاص ببعثة الاتحاد الأوروبي وداخل السفارة البريطانية والكندية احتفالا باليوم العالمي لمناهضة رهاب المثلية ١٧.٠٥.
الآثار الجانبية للعنف الجسدي والنفسي، رفض المجتمع وأشكال التعذيب الأخرى التي يتعرض لها أفراد المجتمع الميم * في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا، لا تختفي بمجرد الوصول إلى بلد أمن كما يعتقد البعض.
المواجهة مع نظام اللجوء والهجرة المعقد ومع كل اعراض ما بعد الصدمة يؤثر على الصحة العقلية لهؤلاء الأشخاص.نظام اللجوء / الهجرة الذي لا يأخذ في الاعتبار خصوصية وطبيعة طالبي اللجوء من مجتمع الميم* من منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا. نلاحظ نقصًا في المعرفة ونهجًا غير حساس من السلطات التي تتعامل مع قضايا مجتمع الميم* من منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا.
أفراد مجتمع الميم* من طالبي اللجوء من منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا يعانون من نظام ”تقييم” من قبل السلطات المعنية يعتمد معايير أوربية وغربية لتحديد الهوية الجنسية لهؤلاء الأفراد.
نظام فشل في إدماجهم بصفة فعلية في المجتمع، فالكثير منهم يشعر بالتهميش داخل المجتمع الجديد.
ومن هذا المنظور، تأتي ضرورة توفير الدعم النفسي والاجتماعي لطالبي اللجوء والمهاجرين من مجتمع الميم*، ومحاربة الوحدة التي يعيشها معظمهم .
